Frequently Asked Question

Your Neighbours' Wi-Fi
Últimas actualizaciones hace 6 años

Picking a channel for your router is import as you want to keep away from your Neighbours. Some routers have tools to let you see your Neighbours however you might need to download software to help you see what is used. Some routers default to Auto and while this works in some cases it is only set the first time your router boots and does not change as more people come online. It could have been good at the start it might be "crowded now"

What is a "Channel?"

A Wi-Fi channel is a range of radio frequencies that an access point or wireless router uses to communicate with your android phone or other Wi-Fi enabled device.
Wi-Fi networks operating on the same channel are forced to share bandwidth.
Wi-Fi channels are arranged in an overlapping pattern (ghosting) according to IEEE_802.11, and adjacent channels share a certain range of bandwidth interfering with one another.

How do I choose the right channel?

First, don't choose a channel used by other networks. Second, don't share bandwidth with others.

Example

Because of "ghosting" when picking a channel you want to pick one a couple away from other one as there is overlap. As example my Neighbours are on channels 1, 6, 8, 10, 11 so the best channel for me to pick would be 3. There are 14 of my Neighbours that are on channel 6 so i should stay away from that. The reason they are on channel 6 is that is a default for a lot of routers.

How can I know what channels are being used around me?

If your router does not help you then you will need to install 3rd party software there are a number of free ones out there. I use "Wifi Analyzer" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en on on my android phone and it provides me all the information i need. While i have not used it here is a windows tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/store/p/wifi-analyzer/9nblggh33n0n that looks to give you the same information.
